He changed her life—and mine.
When people ask why I'm in ministry, I tell them it's because of a woman found in Luke 7. She's simply known as “a sinner.” Apparently everybody around town knew her, this way—for what she did, instead of who she was. Sad, isn't it?
Jesus goes to eat dinner at the home of a religious man, and this woman—the “sinner”—crashes the party. Something has driven her to do it. She desperately longs to show Jesus just how grateful she is, for something he's done. So, without a word, she goes up to him and begins to weep. (Who, I wonder, am I so grateful to, that I would do likewise?) She cries so many tears that she can wash Jesus' feet. And so, she does just that. Then she kisses his feet—not just once, but over and over. Then with her long hair, she dries his feet.
A religious man named Simon—the one who has invited everyone there, that night—sits in the corner, shaking his head. Surely Jesus is not the prophet he pretends to be, if he allows this woman to touch him! he thinks.
Jesus, who always knows what's in everyone's mind, looks into Simon's heart and says, “Simon, I have something to say to you. This woman has shown me so much love because of all she's allowed me do for her. Do you know why you love me so little? Because you haven't allowed me to do anything for you.”
We can act religious, and still not let Jesus touch our hearts. We can go to church, and know a lot about holy scripture, but never understand that Jesus longs to make our lives better. We can turn him down, when all he wants to give us is his love, peace, joy, forgiveness and healing. But if we desire any of these things, we’ve got to admit that we don’t have everything figured out. Someone else has.
Jesus changed the life of the woman in Luke 7. He also changed mine. I challenge you to hear the Good News that NONE of us are too far away from God to receive his love and forgiveness. It's up to us to simply receive, in faith, all that he longs to give!
